According to 9to5Google, the search engine is experimenting with a row of 'widgets' with 6 information cards, in the desktop web version, to offer an experience similar to Discover.
Google Discover
Historically, the Google home page has been known for providing a clean interface that primarily offers a search field. Google Search is now testing a row of widgets on the desktop web for a Discover-like experience.
It is likely that very soon Google will surprise us with a change in the design of its home page , the biggest it has made so far. As revealed by 9to5Google, the search engine would be testing a row of cards on the desktop web in the style of Google Discover at the bottom of the desktop web so that the Internet user could access useful information .
These widgets would offer information on weather, movies, local events or stocks and markets , among other topics.
In this way, it would leave a clean and minimalist interface or, at least, different from what Google has accustomed us to.
They have indicated that they performed the test from several registered devices , but they could only see the change in two of them.
The cards would appear at the bottom of google.com while there would also be an option to 'hide content' in the bottom right corner.
Depending on the city and zip code, the search engine would offer data based on the previous activity of the user .
In total, Google would offer six cards for this redesign that expand on hover , that is, when the window is fully expanded and with information on weather, trends, what to see, stocks/markets, local events and news about COVID-19 .
Tapping on each one opens the full web result with the usual knowledge panel card and/or related Google search experience.
The desktop experience would appear to be similar to Discover on mobile, but without offering another feed to scroll through.
This change would only impact the Google.com search page, not the Google Chrome browser.
At the moment, there are still no indications that the search engine is going to launch the redesign as a permanent option, but it does reveal the intention of the technology to renew itself, as with the launch of its dark mode several months ago .
These cards appear at the bottom of google.com. There is an option to "Hide content" in the bottom right corner, while Google notes your zip code/city and explains that the information offered is "Based on your previous activity". When the window is fully expanded, six cards are offered and they all expand on hover:
- Climate: Weather (with) icon + temperature. Three-day forecast on hover
- Trend: Cover Image with Search Count
- What to Watch: Shows and Movies with Cover Art
- Stocks/Markets - Day Chart On Mouse Over
- Local Events: With date
- News about COVID-19
Tapping opens the full web result with the usual knowledge panel card and/or related Google search experience. The number of cards that appear depends on the size of your screen and there is no way to scroll and see more without physically expanding the window.
This results in an experience similar to Google Discover, but without subjecting people to another feed to navigate. The company, in 2018, insisted that Discover would not come to the desktop web, only to mobile devices.
What Google Search is testing today is quite similar to widgets and brings more utility to a very popular web destination without cluttering the clean experience. Weather is, of course, the most useful addition, while this is a better approach than Chrome's increasingly busy New Tab page. It also dates back to the days of the iGoogle dashboard.
